CAPS Conference and IFA Congress 'Back to Back' August 6 -10 and August 11-15, 2003

Moving Forward with Confidence:
The Seventh Canadian Conference
for People Who Stutter.
August 6-10th, 2003
Delta Chelsea Hotel
Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Organized by the Canadian Association of People who Stutter (CAPS), this year’s conference will focus on family.

Workshops on a wide range of topics and a variety of keynote speakers will appeal to people of all ages who stutter, their families, and speech professionals from across Canada and around the world. This year’s events feature a child- and young-adult-focussed program culminating in an art exhibition.

Keynote speakers at CAPS 2003 include Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, Deborah Kully and Richard Inomata. Deborah Kully is the co-founder and executive director of the Institute for Stuttering Treatment and Research (ISTAR) in Edmonton, Alberta. She has spoken about stuttering worldwide, offering workshops and courses in North America and overseas. Other keynote addresses include conferences in Canada, the U.S., Europe and Australia.

Richard Inomata is a person who stutters, and a masterful public speaker. Having received the highest recognition possible for a member of Toastmasters, he has inspired audiences in the United States and Canada. Over the past decade he has volunteered his time to help people who stutter, and has served as a member of the CAPS Board of Directors.

Don’t Miss This! Beyond his boxing career and his wrongful conviction for murder, Rubin “Hurricane” Carter stuttered as a young man. His story of persistence and courage is a story of success in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Hear it from the man himself, at CAPS 2003!

Watch the Canadian debut of the Our Time Theatre Company (based in New York). Unique in the world, this company of actors, singers, dancers and other performers stutters! The Company uses the fear and shame of stuttering as catalysts for finding confidence and self-esteem within ourselves. The company will present two original and exciting shows: one aimed at adults and one that speaks to the concerns of young adults.
